The Esala Full Moon Poya Day holds immense philosophical, spiritual, and cultural significance for Buddhists in Sri Lanka and across the globe. Marking pivotal turning points in the life of Gautama Buddha, this sacred day also stands as a cornerstone in the establishment of Sri Lanka's Buddhist heritage and cultural renaissance.

The Dawn of the Dhamma and the Sangha

Esala Poya is inextricably linked to several monumental events in the life of the Buddha and the history of Buddhism.

The Conception & The Great Renunciation

Prince Siddhartha was conceived in the womb of Queen Mahamaya on an Esala Poya Day. Years later, driven by a compassionate quest to find an end to human suffering, Prince Siddhartha renounced his worldly wealth and royal status — an event known as the Great Renunciation (Maha Abhinishkramana) — on this very same full moon day.

The First Sermon — Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta

Two months after attaining Supreme Enlightenment, the Buddha delivered His maiden sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (Setting in Motion the Wheel of Dhamma), to the five ascetics at Isipatana Deer Park in Benares, expounding the Noble Four Truths.

Establishment of the Monastic Order (Sangha)

Following the first sermon, Kondanna attained the first stage of sainthood (Sotapanna) and was ordained, marking the official inception of the Buddhist Monastic Order (Sangha).

The First Dhamma Council & Vassa Retreat

The groundwork for the First Buddhist Council (Sangayana), led by Venerable Maha Kassapa, was laid following Esala Poya. It also marks the period when Buddhist monks begin their three-month annual rainy retreat ("Pre-Vassa"), dedicating time to intense meditation and spiritual teaching.

Historical Milestones in Sri Lanka

In the annals of Sri Lankan history, Esala Poya represents royal patronage, faith, and architectural triumphs.

First Native Ordination

Following the arrival of Arahant Mahinda, Prince Arittha and his followers were ordained at Mihintale, establishing the local Order of Monks (Sinha Sangha) in Sri Lanka.

Foundation of the Ruwanwelisaya

King Dutugemunu laid the foundation stone for the magnificent Ruwanwelisaya Stupa in Anuradhapura on an Esala Full Moon Day.

Arrival of the Sacred Tooth Relic

During the reign of King Kithsirimewan, Princess Hemamali and Prince Dantha brought the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada) to Sri Lanka from Kalinga during the Esala season.

Conception of Prince Siddhartha

Prince Siddhartha was conceived in the womb of Queen Mahamaya on an Esala Full Moon day — the very dawn of a story that would illuminate the entire world.

The First Dhamma Council (Sangayana)

The First Buddhist Council was convened three months after the Buddha's Parinirvana at the Sattapanni Cave in Rajagaha, led by Venerable Maha Kassapa, which commenced during this period.

Commencement of Vassa

Esala Poya marks the day prior to the start of Vassa — the three-month rainy retreat — during which Buddhist monks remain in their monasteries to intensify their meditation and spiritual practice while teaching the lay community.

A Grand Cultural Spectacle — The Esala Perahera

The arrival of the Esala season transforms Sri Lanka into a vibrant cultural landscape. The world-renowned Kandy Esala Perahera (The Procession of the Sacred Tooth Relic), along with pageants at the Four Devalayas (Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama, and Pattini), draws devotees and spectators from all over the globe. Major processions across the island — including those at Kataragama, Bellanwila, and Kelaniya — further highlight the rich heritage of this sacred month.
