Global and national
environmental groups, experts, educators and activists celebrate Ozone Day by
holding various events such as talks and conferences promoting the benefits of
having and protecting the ozone layer.
In addition, this day inspires people to come up with innovations for
green energy that will help reduce the depletion of the ozone layer and
provides an opportunity to learn about ways we can all contribute to saving the
planet.
This year's theme is “Montreal Protocol: fixing the ozone
layer and reducing climate change”.
Sri Lanka has also taken some very important steps to save
the ozone layer. Sri Lanka's signing of
the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Convention and acting in accordance with
it can be called as a very important step.
The establishment of the National Ozone Unit under the Ministry of
Environment, the prohibition of bringing ozone harmful substances to Sri Lanka,
and the introduction of ozone-friendly technology to companies that use
chemicals to produce perfumes are notable among them.
