The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

World Ozone Day is celebrated globally on September 16 every year.  The purpose of celebrating Ozone Day is to raise awareness about the depletion of the ozone layer.  Accordingly, every year the theme of World Ozone Day is announced by the United Nations, focusing on the immediate actions to be taken by the people as well as the government.

Global and national environmental groups, experts, educators and activists celebrate Ozone Day by holding various events such as talks and conferences promoting the benefits of having and protecting the ozone layer.  In addition, this day inspires people to come up with innovations for green energy that will help reduce the depletion of the ozone layer and provides an opportunity to learn about ways we can all contribute to saving the planet.

This year's theme is “Montreal Protocol: fixing the ozone layer and reducing climate change”.

Sri Lanka has also taken some very important steps to save the ozone layer.  Sri Lanka's signing of the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Convention and acting in accordance with it can be called as a very important step.  The establishment of the National Ozone Unit under the Ministry of Environment, the prohibition of bringing ozone harmful substances to Sri Lanka, and the introduction of ozone-friendly technology to companies that use chemicals to produce perfumes are notable among them.
